Surface Tension

The Harley Gallery, 2004

‘Surface tension’ was a sculptural installation made in direct response to the architectural features of the Harley Gallery and its courtyard garden. Within this strong and rather formal framework, Gillian created several ‘interventions’. These reacted to the different types of surface in the space, exploring the notion of cause and effect and interrupting the spatial layout.

The resulting works were a series of anomalies that inhabited the space and affected it and appeared to have a structural or functional purpose but were in fact anti-function. Despite this, they were not apparently decorative.
